As a child growing up on a farm in Kingsley, Michigan, I wanted to be an artist with Disney and entered the “You can Draw” contests advertised in magazines. I also wanted to be a teacher. After graduating from Kingsley Area Schools, I attended Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, MI and graduated from Central Michigan University with a B.S. in Elementary Education.
My first teaching job was with the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Teec Nos Pos, Arizona on the Navajo Reservation and also taught in Santa Fe, New Mexico. While in Santa Fe, I met my husband, Fred. We have one son, Nathan, who is married and lives in Ann Arbor, MI. I was hired in MI at Buckley Community Schools in 1976, teaching 5th grade, 5/6th grade Science, 3/4/5th grade reading and writing, art, and computers.
When not creating art, I enjoy reading, gardening, working on my house, and traveling. Besides creating art, I am on the Board of Directors for Artcenter Traverse City, heading the Gallery Committee and teaching classes for the Artcenter and the Kingsley Branch Library. My love of travel has taken me completely around the world visiting Japan, India, Greece, Europe, and many places in between. Recent travel includes trips to Canada and Paris and a crosscountry trip to the redwoods in California.
Places my work has been shown include: Dennos Museum in Traverse City, MI; Ann Arbor Women Artists Show in Northville, Ypsilanti, and Ann Arbor District Library; Artcenter Traverse City (Honorable Mention); Mackinac Island Historic Parks Exhibition showing at the Manoogian Gallery on Mackinac Island (Third Place); the LowellArt Center (Third Place Prize); “Really BigArt” Exhibition in Traverse City; Crooked Tree in Petoskey, MI (Honorable Mention); Gallery Fifty’s “Fish Stories and Waterscapes” in Traverse City; “Graffiti” sponsored by the Minervini Group in Traverse City (Best in Show); Riverside Gallery “Small Works-Great Lakes” Exhibition in Ypsilanti; Manistee Art Institute (Second Place); South Haven Center for the Arts; Gaylord Area Council for the Arts 11th Annual Juried Exhibit (Second Place); MTSU Todd Art Gallery in Tennessee; Mitchell Gallery in Annapolis, Maryland; and the Brooklyn Art Library in New York City.
